Most products nowadays have detachable mains leads, If yours do then a worthwhile improvement in sound quality can be heard from plugging in an Audiophile grade mains cable. There are two types of connections commonly found, one is a two pin plug seen on most Far eastern products (known as a Telefunken), the other is a three pin plug called an IEC (similar to those used on some kettles!)


-DNM Solid core mains cable. A very cost effective 1.25m long cable which can be supplied with either an IEC or Telefunken (figure of eight two pin) connector on one end and a high grade MK mains plug on the other. Decreased resistance gives a more immediate sound when compared with the standard lead: £50.


-Chord ‘Power Chord’ shielded mains cable. Available in various lengths: 1M £130, 1.5M £140 & 2M £150.

-Ixos Qonduit P-MC (Performance mains Cable) New shielded mains cable. More details to follow: £40 (in stock now).

-Supra LoRad mains cable kit. The LoRad cable uses an innovative screen design that does not require a drain wire yet still offers excellent sheilding. The kit needs to be assembled and includes an IEC connector, mains plug, instructions and a length of LoRad cable: £42 for a one metre kit, plus £7.50 per additional half metre length required.

-Musicworks IEC A 2m long screened cable carefully constructed to ensure that magnetic materials are avoided wherever possible. Only available with IEC connectors. Bigger improvements than the DNM above, the screening reduces noise making sounds appear out of a quieter background: £60.

-Music Works IEC+ mains cable as above, but with thicker cross section, particularly suited for higher current applications: .£100

-Merlin Mains Cables. This range of cables feature ferrite blocks for effective noise reduction. The range starts with the £35 Red Back, the £50 Tarantula*, the award winning £85 Black Widow*, the £150 Funnel Web, Scorpion at £250 and finishes with the ultimate Dragon (pictured above right) at £450. Stop press: *Now available with 2 pin plugs as an option.


-Isotek Premium mains cable. Shielded 1.5 Metre cable available with either IEC or figure of eight connector : £70.

-Isotek Elite Mains Cable. Fitted with an MK Tough plug and high grade IEC Connector. This 1.5 metre long, PVC sheathed annealed copper wire is contained within a galvanised steel braid and is an excellent sounding screened high current cable: £100.


-Isotek Optimum shielded 1.5M mains cable: £175

-Isotek Supreme shileded 1.5M mains cable: £225.

-Power Wrap: Hailing from America this intriguing product is a plastic coated proprietary metal composite spiral designed to fit around mains and audio cables. Three versions are available:

Mains distribution • Filters • Isolation transformers

-Isotek Isoplug. Simply plug the Isoplug into any 13A socket next to, or as close as possible, to any domestic appliance that produces, or is suspected of producing noise. This will prevent it from polluting the mains in the rest of your home. More than one Isoplug can be used to reduce mains noise further throughout a house: £35.


-Isotek GII NeoPlug advanced version of the Isoplug :£55.

Isotek Solus: £375


The Isotek Solus filters/conditions the mains supply and features 6 mains sockets on the back. As can be seen above it features a star wired circuit board. Rated at up to 10 Amps. Available with either black or silver fascia at the same cost.

Isotek Minisub GII: £625

The Minisub filters/conditioner is wired with three separate filters, so that two of the six mains sockets are wired from a 6.5A stage for larger current draw devices, two are wired for digital components and two wired for analogue. Available with either black or silver fascia at the same cost.


There is also the Minisub GII Vision available, which is the same as above but primarily optimised for use in AV systems. The price is the same as above.


Isotek Sigmas: £995



The Sigmas is a high end mains conditioner with very high current capability. It comes with its own mains input cable and uses electronic breakers for safe and easily resetable fusing. Available in Silver or Black.

-Music Works 6 way MegaBlock. The distribution block was designed after extensive listening tests and uses six individual high grade sockets mounted in a neat non-ferrous box with a captive, shielded mains cable: £230.
